Rebabbitting of White Metal Bearings – Manufacturer For 43 Years

The rebabbitting operation executed by us has the following features:

The white metal of the bearing is removed under the controlled temperature.
The bare bearing steel casing is shot-blasted for proper cleaning.
The bearing casing is subject to hardness test and all the hard spots are removed by scooping.
The bearing casing is subject to crack detection by the MPI process.
The bearing is centrifugally cast.
All the bearings after rebabbitting are subject to ultrasound tests to check the bonding with the base metal
Final machining is done on CNC machines maintaining close tolerance as per the requirements.

**Manufacturing of White Metal Bearings**

Rebabbitting and Machining Procedures followed by RA Power Solutions

1. Obtain all dimensions and inspect for abnormal or noticeable damage to the bearing shell and surface.

2. Remove the old babbitt and inspect the bonding surface and bearing shell for defects.

3. Prepare a bearing shell before babbitting. We do the shot blasting of the bearing shell.

4. Checking of hardness of bearing shell and removal of hard spots by scooping process.

5. Crack detection of bearing shell by MPI process.

6. If required we also undertake dye penetrant tests and Ultrasonic tests.

7. Cast Babbitt by centrifugal process.

8. Machine splits, assemble bearing, rough machine.

9. Ultrasonically inspect the Babbitt bond.

10. Assemble bearing and finish machine bore and thrust faces.

11. Machine and drill oil reliefs, thermocouples, and oil ports.

12. Prepare bearing for shipper. (deburr, assemble, paint)

13. Record all finished dimensions and file for future service.

14. Package and skid bearings.

15. Follow up with customers to ensure satisfaction.

We undertake Rebabbitting of white metal bearing by two most popular processes described in brief as follow:-

Babbitting of bearing by centrifugal process

The rebabbitting of old bearing and babbitting of new bearing by centrifugal casting process is most popular and results in high quality of bonding between the babbitt white metal and steel lining of the bearing. In this process, babbitt metal is spun to the bearing housing (outer steel lining of bearing) in spin fixtures actuated by the variable speed of drive units alloying bonding of white metal with the steel shell of the bearing. The temperature of white metal and the bearing shell is strictly controlled.

Static pouring

The process of static pouring of babbitt white metal is commonly used mainly in the cases where centrifugal process cannot be followed due to the design restriction and profile of white metal bearing. Repour each bearing continuous pour of white metal eliminating the possibility of cracks or joints in the babbitt. This also avoids any possibility of premature failure bearings.

Rough machining and final machining of bearings

We have inhouse facility to undertake the rough machining and final machining of bearings after the babbitting of white metal is undertaken. The final machining of inner diameter and critical dimensions is undertaken on the CNC machines fitted with DRDO devices.

This ensures that the white metal babbitt bearing after manufacturing or rebabbitting process has all the dimensions strictly as per the drawing and tolerances stipulated there off. We as a repair company understand the importance of maintaining the critical dimensions specially the inner diameter on which the shaft has to rotate.

We are ISO 9001:2015 certified company and follow strict quality control which include following:-

MPI for crack detection of bearing shell prior to white metal babbitting process. This is done by level II qualified technician. The MPI test for crack detection is done prior and also after the short blasting process is done.
We do not accept the presence of any crack in the bearing steel shell. In case of crack observed, either the bearing shell is rejected or in consultation by our senior engineers, the cracked area of the bearing shell is removed by the scooping process.
Bonding of white metal with the steel shell is checked by ultrasound, no abnormality is accepted.
Dimensional inspection for taper, ovality and all critical dimensions important from the assembly point of view are thoroughly checked.
