In olden times whenever the crankpin or main journal of the crankshaft was damaged due to bearing failure or any other reason, the crankshaft was removed from the engine block by disassembly of the complete engine, packed, and taken to the workshop for grinding on a stationary crankshaft grinding machine.

This exercise not only delayed the commissioning of the engine but also cost it a fortune. In the early 80s, we received many crankshafts in our plant from overseas including Qatar, South America, etc. weighing more than 9 tons by Sea/Air.

In Situ Grinding Crankpins

With the introduction of an onsite machining tool, it is possible to undertake the repair of the crankpin and main journal. RA Power Solutions undertakes onsite grinding of crankshaft and main journal of the diameter ranging from 35 mm to 700 mm. The repair is possible without disassembling the engine and there is no need for the removal of the crankshaft. The portable and lightweight crankshaft machining tool is inserted from the window for grinding and polishing.

It is centerless equipment and works on the same concept as of bench-type crankshaft grinding machine. No reference to the radius fillet of the crankpin is taken as in case of an accident the radius fillet gets damaged.

White metal babbitt bearings are manufactured by RA Power Solutions for all applications like engines, pumps, turbines, alternators, and rotatory equipment.

The white metal babbitt bearings are manufactured as per the drawing or as per the sample of the bearings of the equipment which are no longer produced by the original manufacturer. Stringent quality control norms are followed at the time of manufacturing of white metal bearings. The centrifugal system followed for the rebabbitting of white metal is used which ensures an excellent bonding between the base metal and white metal.

The white metal after centrifugal casting has a dense surface without any pin holes or blow holes which results in the satisfactory performance and long life of the white metal babbitt bearing.

The rough and final machining and maintenance of various critical dimensions are maintained by using in-house latest design of equipment. Crankpin Grinding by Crankshaft Grinding Machine – RA Power Solutions

A diesel power plant based in northern India having 10 nos. of 12.3 MW Wartsila diesel generating sets reported severe causality involving one of their Wartsila generators.

RA Power Solutions team of technicians rushed to the power plant with the measuring instruments and onsite crankshaft grinding equipment to assess the cause of the breakdown.

On undertaking the detailed inspection of the crankshaft including dimensional check, hardness test, and MPI for crack and deflection, it was observed that one of the crankpin journals was damaged due to the failure of a big end bearing.

The following were the main observations:

  • Taper and ovality in the crankpin were observed as 0.70 mm.
  • Due to the failure of the bearing, deep line marks were visible.
  • Hardness and MPI tests were done, and no cracks were observed.

RA Power Solutions used the latest design of onsite crankshaft grinding machine having almost no vibrations. The crankpin was undersized by 1.5 mm maintaining the tolerance within 10 microns. Our technicians took only 18 hours to complete the Crankshaft repair from the time of the start of the preliminary inspection, grinding, and final inspection. The repair of the crankpin in such a short time was possible due to the latest technology onsite crankshaft grinding machine used and the experience of our technicians. The engine was assembled and is performing satisfactorily.
