Procedures Adopted for the Rebabbitting of Alternator/Generator Bearings of Wärtsilä B35:40V20AG2 (9.4 MW)

a) The existing white metal was removed from the bearings. A metallurgical test was conducted to determine the grade of the metal used. It was ensured that the same grade, or a higher grade, of white metal was used for rebabbitting as originally present in the bearings.

b) We used only high-quality white metal imported from a leading manufacturer in Spain.

c) After the removal of the white metal, the alternator/generator bearing shells were subjected to sandblasting to expose the base metal and create a suitable surface profile, ensuring excellent bonding between the base metal and the new Babbitt lining.

d) Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) was carried out to detect any cracks. Based on our experience, cracks can develop due to accidents or abnormal increases in operating temperature.

e) The hardness of the inner diameter (ID) of the alternator/generator bearings was checked. If any hard spots were detected, they were removed by localized grinding or using the “scooping” technique.

f) Rebabbitting was carried out using a centrifugal casting system, ensuring a uniform white metal lining with proper metallurgical bonding.

g) The Babbitt surfaces were precision machined and polished to a mirror finish, and a protective wax coating was applied prior to delivery.

h) After rebabbitting, ultrasonic testing (UT) was carried out to detect any internal defects or abnormalities.

These procedures were followed during the rebabbitting of the alternator/generator bearings of Wärtsilä B35:40V20AG2 (9.4 MW), ensuring superior metallurgical bonding, dimensional accuracy, reliable performance, and extended service life under demanding operating conditions.

We have the facility to carry out rebabbitting for bearings up to 1500 mm in diameter.

Repair of Wartsila Generator Bearing

We received an old, damaged generator bearing from one of our clients based in Russia. The bearing had developed ovality, and the white metal was also chipped off. The rebabbitting of bearing was undertaken, and the final diameter was maintained as per the Wartsila alternator shaft.

The following features have been adopted:

a) The white metal was removed from the bearings. A metallurgical test was done to determine the grade of the metal used.

b) We import and use only white metal from a leading manufacturer based in Spain.

c) After removal of the white metal, the bearing shell was subjected to sandblasting of the base metal surface to bare metal to create an acceptable coarse finish and attain excellent bonding with the Babbitt metal.

d) A magnetic particle test was done to check for cracks. It is our experience that cracks can develop in case of any accident or abnormal increase in temperature.

e) Hardness on the inner diameter of the bearing shall is checked. In case any hard spots are observed, they are removed by localized grinding or “scooping” technology.

f) The rebabbitting is done by a centrifugal system, which will ensure a uniform deposit of white metal with proper bonding.

g) Surfaces of the Babbitt is machined and polished to a mirror finish and applied with protective wax upon delivery.

h) After rebabbitting and machining, an ultrasonic test is done to check for any abnormalities.
