Main journal bearings are critical engine components that support the crankshaft and allow it to rotate smoothly within the engine block. They reduce friction and wear between moving metal parts in internal combustion engines.
Use standard bearings when the crankshaft and housing dimensions match the original factory specifications. However, install undersize bearings—which are thicker—after grinding down the crankshaft due to wear or damage, as they restore proper clearances.
You can repair worn journal bearings through a process called rebabbitting, where you remove the old babbitt material and replace it with a new layer to restore the bearing to its original specifications and performance.
Undersize journal bearings are typically used after crankshaft regrinding, which reduces the journal diameter. These bearings compensate for the reduced size and help maintain correct oil clearance and engine performance.
Manufacturers commonly make journal bearings from babbitt metal, an alloy known for its excellent anti-friction properties. Other materials include copper-lead alloys, aluminum alloys, and composite materials, depending on the application.
