Rebabbitting of bearing is the process of removing worn Babbitt metal from a bearing shell and applying a fresh layer to restore its original performance. This is essential when the Babbitt surface shows wear, damage, or degradation that affects bearing reliability.

Why Rebabbitting Is Important

Rebabbitting brings a damaged or worn bearing back to OEM-level efficiency by restoring:

Correct bearing geometry

Load-carrying capacity

Lubrication flow

Vibration and heat control

Turbine bearing After White Metal Rebabbitting

Signs Your Bearing Needs Rebabbitting

If you notice any of these issues, the bearing likely needs immediate inspection or rebabbitting:

Wear marks or uneven surfaces

Scoring, pitting, or blistering

Burn marks or discoloration

Lubrication breakdown

Excess vibration or noise

These symptoms often indicate deeper problems in the shaft line or lubrication system, so early diagnosis is crucial.

How Rebabbitting Is Done

Inspection & Non-Destructive Testing

Technicians inspect the bearing for cracks, alignment issues, and material fatigue.

Old Babbitt Removal
They melt or machine off the worn Babbitt layer from the shell.

Surface Preparation
They clean, tin, and prep the shell to ensure a strong bond.

New Babbitt Casting
High-grade babbitt metal—typically tin-based—is poured or centrifugally cast.

Machining to OEM Specs
They bore, chamfer, and finish the new Babbitt surface to precise OEM tolerances.

Final QA & Clearance Check
The bearing is tested for geometry, hardness, bond strength, and fit.

Why Babbitt Metal Is Used

Babbitt works as a soft, protective layer that:

Embeds contaminants (protecting the shaft)

Supports hydrodynamic lubrication

Reduces friction and heat

Prevents catastrophic damage during overloads

Rebabbitting Services by R A Power Solutions

Tin-based Babbitt contains over 80% tin alloy with small amounts of antimony, lead, and copper. These alloys offer low wear and tear and minimal friction, making them suitable for high-performance equipment. Lead-free tin-based alloys are also recommended for food industry applications where lead presence is a concern.

Manufacturers use tin-based Babbitt metal for mechanical equipment because it can handle heavy loads in compressors, diesel engines, electric motors, marine applications, and similar machinery.

Different Grades of Babbitt White Metal for the Manufacturing of Bearings

Depending on the application of the bearing, load characteristics, the environment in which the bearing is in operation, the type of lubricating oil used, RPM of the shaft, etc the grade of bearing is selected. We also use the Babbitt white metal grade as recommended by the manufacturer of the equipment or use the Babbitt white metal based on our experience. In any case, the BEZ alternator Babbitt white metal bearing used by us is of better quality than what was originally used.

The use of European quality and higher grade of Babbitt white metal results in a considerable increase in the life of Babbitt white metal bearings manufactured by us. It is proven that the high quality of Babbitt white metal bearing also increases the life of the shaft on which it is assembled. The crankshaft, rotor shaft, pump shaft, turbine shaft, cylinder shaft, and shafts of all applications life increase manifolds.

What is Babbitt Metal?

Babbitt is an extraordinary metal used in bearings because of its heat resistance and durability. It contains varying percentages of copper, antimony, tin, and other alloys. Industries use Babbitt metal as a bearing surface in plain bearings for different applications. Isaac Babbitt developed white metal as a soft alloy.

It is utilized to line cast iron. White metal or babbit metal can be either tin or lead-based. This Babbitt metal is soft and finds use in engines, turbines, and alternators. Industries also use Babbitt metal, or white metal, as a rolling contact surface in friction bearings because it offers excellent load-bearing properties.

RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. manufactures white metal Babbitt bearings with diameters up to 1500 mm. We select the outer steel casing material based on the application, and our design parameters determine the grade of white metal. We import Babbitt white metal from a leading manufacturing company in Spain. Our team applies the white metal to the steel casing using a centrifugal babbitting system to achieve a strong bond. This proven method is widely used across the industry. We maintain the white metal thickness strictly according to the specified requirements.

We have in-house facilities to perform various machining operations after white metal babbitting. The bore size is maintained within the tolerances specified by the manufacturer.

Our Technicians also rebabbit old bearings. Our team removes the old Babbitt white metal and inspects the steel casing for cracks, excessive hardness, and profile deformation. If the steel casing meets all required parameters, we rebabbit the bearing using the same grade or a superior grade of Babbitt white metal. This process ensures significantly better performance after rebabbitting.

We export new Babbitt bearings and also offer rebabbitting services for old bearings to reputed companies worldwide. We prioritise quality and offer competitive pricing with a minimal delivery period.
