Wartsila 6R32 Crankshaft Repair | RA Power Solutions

A continuous process industry based in western India using 2 units of Wartsila 6R32 for their power requirements reported a breakdown of one of the Wartsila 6R32 diesel generating sets.

What We Do:

RA Power Solutions sent senior technicians with portable inspection instruments and an onsite crankshaft grinding and polishing machine. They reported the following observations on the crankpins:

  • We investigated the Wartsila diesel generating sets and found a clear case of lube oil pump failure.

  • All 6 crankpins damaged.

  •  Inspection in detail is carried out. The gist of this is as follows:
  •  Crankpin no. 1 ovality of 0.76 mm. No cracks observed. Hardness within limits.
  •  Crankpin no. 2 ovality of 0.54 mm. No cracks observed.. Hardness within limits.
  •  Crankpin no. 3 ovality of 0.26 mm. No cracks observed. Hardness within limits.
  •  Crankpin no. 4 ovality of 0.49 mm. No cracks observed. Hardness within limits.
  •  Crankpin no. 5 ovality of 0.29 mm. No cracks observed. Hardness within limits.
  •  Crankpin no. 6 ovality of 0.62 mm. No cracks observed. Hardness within limits.

We inspected the Wartsila 6R32 crankshaft and decided to repair it by grinding the crankpin.

We ground three pins undersized by 1 mm and three pins undersized by 0.5 mm. RA Power maintained taper, ovality, and surface finish far better than the manufacturer’s recommendations. We completed the job in a record 6 days.

Why Choose On Site Grinding?

Traditional Bench GrindingOnsite / Insitu Grinding
Requires removal of crankshaft, transport, higher handling riskPerformed at site, less handling, less risk, lower transport cost
Higher downtimeFaster turnaround, repairs are executed where the equipment is located
Fixed-machine limitations for large componentsOur machines cover a wide diameter range (30-700 mm) for large shafts

Recent Projects and Training

  • We recently supplied a 220-260 mm diameter onsite crankshaft grinding machine to a client in Bangladesh, supporting diesel generating sets and marine vessels.
  • Included with the supply is one week onsite training for client technicians in operation and maintenance. This helps ensure smooth use and long service life.

FAQs:

1. What the diameter range covered on-site crankshaft grinding machine?

From 30 mm up to 700 mm.

2. Do I need to remove the crankshaft for grinding?

No ,the machine works in situ, meaning you don’t need to remove the shaft.

3. How quickly can technicians learn to operate and maintain the grinding machine?

About one week of onsite training.

4. What materials used in the machine’s key components for durability?

Titanium and ferrous alloys used.

5. How does on-site grinding reduce overall repair & downtime costs?

By eliminating transportation, reducing handling, and speeding up repair execution.
