RA Power Solutions was approached by a steel manufacturing company located in the western part of India for the problem faced by them in turbine bearing. The technicians with the necessary instruments were deputed to the site and an inspection of damaged white metal turbine bearings and turbine shaft was conducted.

Following are the main observations:-

Turbine bearing inspection

• The turbine bearing was removed from the shaft and it was observed that the white metal from the bearing was partially removed.
• The portion of the turbine bearing was exposed to heat and was turned into a blackish color.
• The deep bearing line marks were observed on the rest of the bearing’s inner diameter.

Observations on turbine shaft:-

• The turbine shaft was calibrated, and the dimensions, taper, and ovality were observed within limits as specified in the manufacturer’s manual.
• Line marks were observed on the turbine shaft bearing sitting area.
• The surface finish of the turbine shaft, and bearing sitting area was checked and found rough.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to put the plant back into operation in minimum possible time:-

• The turbine bearing was sent to our workshop for inspection and rebabbitting purposes.
• After thorough inspection for hardness, and crack by MPI method, the rebabbitting of the bearing was undertaken.
• The turbine shaft bearing sitting area was polished by the latest generation of onsite polishing machines.
• The bearing line marks were removed and the surface finish of the bearing sitting area of the turbine shaft was maintained to less than 20 RA value.
• After the final machining of the white metal babbitt turbine bearing inner diameter, the bearing was dispatched and assembled at the site.
• The turbine was put back into operation in the minimum possible time.
